ABSTRACT

Most women have breasts. Most men don’t. Women who have had mastectomies don’t have “real” breasts, but many have prosthetic breasts.1

Men are not usually born with breasts but, like women, men can wear breasts, get breast implants, or take hormones to develop a bust. In American culture, breasts signify nourishing, nurturing motherhood, the object of love, and also libidinal desire. Breasts sell. They sell beer and cars and cigarettes and other products that advertisers want to tell us feel good to use. Breasts feel good to use.2 When we emphatically tell the truth, we speak from our heart and beat our breasts. We carry our pride there. Those we love fall asleep on our breasts, and we fall asleep on theirs.
