ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses mental toughness in terms of its importance within Higher Education. University requires a great degree of independent learning requiring students to manage their own learning to a greater extent than in secondary education. This may mean that mental toughness is even more important for success in Higher Education than in compulsory education. Each component of mental toughness, as well as total mental toughness, was closely associated with both attainment and life satisfaction. It is important to note that the relationships between mental toughness and attainment were much stronger than those observed in the previous study. Mental toughness may also be important for other aspects of Higher Education, such as the ease of the transition into university life, and the extent to which students form close friendships with their peers.
