ABSTRACT

The research for this study began in October 1996 as the first stage of a proposal to examine the principles and potential of the intelligent façade as it was ordinarily termed.1 The initial stage of the research programme was to compile a case study database of built examples of façade intelligence. This book is intended to serve as a review of the current best practice in the relatively new field of intelligence in buildings. The extent of the study was confined to the embodiment of intelligence within the building façade. However, it proved necessary to consider the façade within the context of an intelligent building system, of which the intelligent skin was a constituent.
