ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nature of the ethnographic approach and reviewing highly-influential studies to demonstrate the value of the ethnographic approach to workplace studies. It discusses key methodological concerns in ethnography and justifies the research by providing insights into the actual process in which the research. Ethnography is the research methodology in which researchers participate in organisations, societies and people’s lives for an extended period of time to collect data for their studies. A comparative study examining various cases within the tradition of ethnography can draw on the similarities and differences among different contexts to increase the power of analysis. Gaining access is one of the most important steps in organisational studies for ethnographic research. The analysis drew out key themes such as generalisation, reflexivity and gaining and sustaining access to reflect how the research was conducted and justify the research.
