ABSTRACT

Michael Pringle worked as a house officer in the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital. Pringle himself has described Tom Stewart as ‘exactly the sort of role model that someone like myself would yearn for’, citing Stewart responsible for strengthening his commitment to general practice. After completing his vocational training, Pringle joined a practice in Collingham near Newark in 1979, retiring as a partner in the practice in 2004. Since retirement, he has retained links with the practice through his role as education director at the Collingham Healthcare Education Centre. Whilst working in Collingham, Pringle started working as a senior lecturer at the University of Nottingham Medical School in 1989, becoming a professor in 1993. Arguably one of Pringle’s greatest contributions to general practice has been his development of significant event auditing. This is a form of auditing whereby a patient’s care is reviewed to determine whether the outcomes have been beneficial or harmful to the individual.
