ABSTRACT

Microsoft Corporation is a multinational computer technology firm. Core businesses within Microsoft include the development and production of software, including operating systems as well as Internet and productivity software. Microsoft and Nokia had established a partnership in 2011 aimed at benefiting both firms in the smart phone and mobile industry. With declining relevance in the mobile space and activist investors clamoring for progress, Microsoft was under increasing pressure to make major changes. In addition to taking on Microsoft’s challenges, the position also required an ability to manage aggressive personalities on the board, including Gates, Ballmer and Thompson. Microsoft experienced continued financial success, despite late introduction of products and lack of agility in management to keep up with the changing technological landscape. Notable about Satya Nadella’s tenure at Microsoft was his willingness to open up the insular and often fractional culture of Microsoft, seeking out feedback from outside companies and at least partially embracing open-source coding.
