ABSTRACT

The recent massive migration from China’s rural areas to the cities has been the subject ofmuch social and scholarly interest. Yet themillions of childrenwho have migrated to the cities with their parents have received far less attention or research. Before 2001, when some of China’s media, such as the influential nationwide Nanfang Zhoumo began to feature stories about these children, the vast majority of urban residents in cities like Beijing were largely unaware that very large numbers of children with rural hukou1 were living in their city. Today, although the issue of migrant children and their education receives much more attention,2 very little is actually known about them.
