ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the dynamic relationships between migration and regional growth. It provides a structured analytical framework for this task a sketch is required of the contending theories of labor and capital mobility. In the interest of clarity and for the purpose of generating a set of empirical propositions, the chapter concentrates on two schools of thought which are mutually exclusive: the capital-logic and competitive market schools. These theories are analyzed using two sets of data and times–series techniques which are more suitable for economic adjustment analysis than conventional, regression-based models. The capital-logic school focuses on the social relations of production and especially strategies of domination and exploitation used by firms to control labor. So as to establish temporal patterns between migration and capital, cross-correlation functions were computed between capital growth and in- and outmigration as a preliminary step in identifying lead–lag relationships.
