ABSTRACT

Military collections comprise artefacts and building heritage relating to the unique identity of armed forces units, including items relating to defence. Many of these representative organisations collect items that uniquely identify the groups within each of them, often with a social historic flavour. Military collections specialise in military histories and contain objects of a patriotic nature, interpreting military history via displays and exhibitions organised around conflicts and peacekeeping missions. Many military collections focus on the material record of the history surrounding military campaigns. Military collections can take various forms; some may form part of displays within a broader local authority museum, others may sit within an independent museum focused totally on the military collections themselves. Some objects may originate from a military organisation, as opposed to an individual donor. The styles and decoration of military uniforms varied depending on military hierarchies and changing uniform developments throughout different conflicts.
