ABSTRACT
In the Life of Apollonius of Tyana, Philostratus has his protagonist discuss the nature of mimēsis, drawing on Aristotle’s Poetics but arguing, unlike Aristotle, for an internal process of mimēsis by which viewers interpret. This chapter considers Philostratus’ depiction of interpretation as an act of mimēsis, especially through dialogues of interpretation, in the Life of Apollonius and the Heroicus, a dialogue on hero cult. As well as establishing a model of interpretation, these texts also explore the various factors that can lead to errors of interpretation, especially the desires and fears of the interpreting subject.
