ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces types of pumps that are used in the dairy industry. In dairy industry different types of pumps are used based on their function and type of the product to be pumped. Basically pumps are classified into two types: dynamic pumps and positive displacement pumps. Positive displacement pumps are widely used for pumping mostly viscous fluids, such as cream with high fat content, cultured milk products, curd, and whey. The basic components in a pump system are pumps, drive motors, piping networks, valves, and system controls. The pumps are monitored for their efficient working condition by using different diagnostic tools. The tools keep a check on the pump by using different analyzers. The analyzers are capable of detecting the changes in temperature and sound patterns, occurring in the pump which is considered to be harmful.
