ABSTRACT

The mining industry is playing extremely important role to the Northern Territory (NT) economy. Current major mining projects involve a variety of world-class deposits from this resource-rich and geologically diverse part of Australia, for example: Nabalco is one of the world’s leading bauxite mining and alumina processing companies, Ranger is Australia’s largest uranium mine and the world’s third largest uranium producer, Groote Eylandt is the world’s largest producer of high grade manganese ore accounting for 20% of the world’s supply, McArthur River has one of the largest deposits of zinc in the world and the Merlin diamonds mine.

In many respects mining in the NT is different from mining in other parts of the world. Factors that contribute to this difference include extreme climatic conditions, unique environment, remoteness, and social issues
