ABSTRACT

Through the creation of an experimental music educational workshop for young novices, the author discovers a paradox in teaching a philosophy of musical de-skilling. Rather than prioritising learning outcomes that experimental musicianship might inculcate, he describes a shift towards the mixed-skill ensemble as a ‘social sculpture’ whose very assembly, as well as its sound-making, might both hold aesthetic value and make a social statement.
