ABSTRACT

Mobile phone interviews are interviews that require respondents to answers questions using a mobile phone, which is personally owned by the respondent or given to them by the researcher. There a number of ways in which mobile phones can be used for interviewing, including mobile phone-assisted personal interviewing; mobile computer-assisted personal interviewing; computer-assisted self-interviewing; computer-assisted personal interviewing; and computer-assisted telephone interviewing. Mobile phones can also be used to collect log data that can be integrated into qualitative interviews for elicitation purposes. A more in-depth epistemological, theoretical and methodological discussion can be found in S. Brinkmann and S. Kvale. Neither of these books specifically covers mobile phone interviews, but the information provides important background reading for those who are interested in conducting any type of interview for their research.
