ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the political positions embedded within the specific theories used to address soccer migration. It then outlines a particular approach to the transnational migration of athletes and other professionals involved in the production of global sport. The chapter argues that adopting a transnational perspective allows for greater understanding as it focuses upon the actual movements of people instead of being wholly encapsulated and contained by global football's institutional structures. It examines the differences between global and transnational approaches to understanding the movements of female professionals in soccer. Soccer organizations in certain locations engage in practices to facilitate women's visibility in soccer. These localities are the ones that are either significant destinations for female soccer professionals from around the world, or are major producers of transnational athletes resulting in a significant proportion plying their trades overseas. Female soccer migrants' experiences of transnational migration are going to be distinctly different from those of their male counterparts.
