ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the approach used in deradicalisation programmes in Malaysia. Four stages of radicalisation – pre-radicalisation, self-identification, indoctrination, and action – are discussed. Based on a literature review and observation of deradicalisation programmes implemented in this region, it is found that each country has its own method of counterterrorism. The programmes bring positive impacts to society as a whole. However, there are some similarities in the approach used by the four countries namely through their counselling programmes that emphasised communication between terrorists and psychologists. Various factors contributed to the involvement in terrorism based on the results. Therefore, this programme guides former terrorists to return to the right path of the Islamic teaching which encourages its followers to conduct a life of moderation and avoid violence that portrays a negative image of Islam to the world. In addition, the chapter emphasises the role of society as the closest unit in the deradicalisation process and in motivating former terrorists to participate in meaningful ways so that they do not return to the radical ideology. As a whole, the positive effects of deradicalisation programmes can be clearly seen, and most of the programmes implemented were successful, as discussed in this chapter.
