ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the authors attempt to bridge the paradigm divide by using a model that includes competencies as well as an element of outcome. One of the major changes currently facing the NHS is the introduction of the electronic health record and the electronic patient record. These developments obviously bring with them new technology, which leads to new skill requirements for staff. A fundamental problem with the Benner model is that, across the board, an individual’s performance is not necessarily uniform across all aspects of their role. An integrated system can build up a profile of the actual skill or performance level one possess in relation to each item and also the gap between one's performance and that required by one's role. Education and training can then be based on developing the skills one's actually need to do their job.
