ABSTRACT

Modern society is currently undergoing tremendous change. This also has a decisive impact on how society’s institutions are to be led. Regardless of which institutions one looks at, one discovers a concern with finding new forms of leadership. Philosophy is thus not bound to what exists. It attempts, rather, to take a stand. This is the essence of philosophy. It is this position taking which makes leadership philosophy so relevant in modern society, and also has led to the establishment of the philosophy of leadership as a separate sub-field of philosophy. This understanding of leadership points out domination’s decisive importance for every context in which leadership is involved. Leadership is found in all societies. There is no known society where leadership has not played a central role in the reproduction of social life. Thus, reflexivity is decisive for modern leadership inasmuch as reflexivity entails a relationship to communication.
