ABSTRACT

A growing portion of the concern about privacy invasion

surrounds data mining and both its perceived and real

threats to personal privacy. Recent events demonstrate

how various representatives of the public worldwide are

demanding protection against abuse of personal informa-

tion by organizations using data mining techniques on their

warehouse databases. The European Union (EU) has

already passed legislation protecting personal privacy.

Similar legislative and regulatory privacy protection con-

siderations exist in other countries, including Australia,

Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and the Czech

Republic, and more have already begun to follow. The

U.S. government is encouraging American companies to

follow voluntary compliance, reinforced by the Federal

Communications Commission (FCC), Federal Trade

Commission (FTC), and other regulatory bodies.
