ABSTRACT

The time between a virus first being sighted and the

release of an antivirus vendor’s update that identifies the

virus is commonly referred to as the window of opportunity

for the given threat. Reviewing available data on the Internet

still shows that while a handful of vendors are able to detect

malicious programs and code without dependence on the

explicit identification of the threat in a product update, some

current-day antivirus vendors are still struggling to keep up

with product updates in the face of ever faster and more

malicious threats leaving users exposed to a window of

opportunity that is simply unacceptable.
