ABSTRACT

Read-only memory. Code contained on ROM chips on the system board in routers performs power-on diagnos-

tics. This function is similar to the power-on self-test

that PCs perform. In network routers, OS software is

also loaded by a bootstrap program in ROM. Software

upgrades are performed by removing and replacing

ROM chips on some types of routers, while others may

use different techniques to store and manage the operat-

ing system.
