Linux (several distributions), and Microsoft Windows (95/
98/ME, NT4/2000/XP). At the time of this writing, Ethereal
was open-source software licensed under the GNU General
Public License.
After download and installation, the security practi-
tioner can simply click on “Capture” and then “Start,”
choose the appropriate network adapter, and then click on
“OK.” The capture session begins, and a summary window
displays statistics about the packets as they are being
captured (see Fig. 1).
