ABSTRACT

When considering the tiered classifications of the

Uptime Institute and others, it should be noted that a high

rating applies only to the availability of the data and

redundancy of the supporting systems. The Uptime

Institute’s tiered rating does not incorporate the potentially

catastrophic effects of failure with the other two founda-

tions of the CIA (confidentiality, integrity, and availabil-

ity) triad. This entry deals primarily with the physical

security strategies, processes, roles, and equipment neces-

sary to protect the availability of the mission-critical facil-

ity and data center; however, much of the text also address

one or more areas of physical security, including access

control, surveillance, and perimeter protection. The predo-

minant theme for this entry is prevention.
