ABSTRACT
Packet-switching networks provide a solution to the prohi-
bitive telephone costs of long-distance dial-up service. The
California user, for example, need only install the same type
of telephone and modem on a direct dial-up system. Instead
of dialing a number with a New York area code, the user
dials a local telephone number that establishes a connection
to the switching node within the area.
