ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the on-site or off-site use of the end asphaltic product as pavement, liners, berms, and hydraulic applications. It also discusses the application considerations, such as seal coating and curing, and quality control and assurance including production consistency, temperatures, weight, cost, and certificate of compliance. Application of processed asphalt is typically performed in 3-in. lifts, with an asphalt emulsion tack coat applied to the native surface and between lifts. Mixes for lay-down application can be open-graded mixes, dense-graded mixes, or sand mixes. Seal coating is commonly applied to the laid-down surface for aesthetic purposes. Asphaltic emulsions are measured in tons. Costs for asphaltic emulsions are routinely measured per ton. A certificate of compliance is a form that should accompany each shipment of asphaltic emulsion received. Information included on such forms includes shipment number, type of emulsion, refinery, co-signee, designation, quantity, purchase order or contract number, and date of shipment.
