ABSTRACT

Image processing systems consist of specialized hardware and software for the analysis and display of digital images. All computer data —integers, real numbers, letters, special characters, etc. — are stored in bit format. Satellite data are often purchased on 9-track and 8-mm magnetic tapes. Multispectral image data are usually packaged on tapes and disks in one of three formats: band sequential, band interleaved by line, or band interleaved by pixel. Digital images can be displayed on a computer monitor by using the pixel values to control the video intensity of each pixel on the screen. A common strategy in image enhancement is to assign video intensities so that approximately the same number of image pixels is displayed with each video intensity. This approach is called histogram equalization. Color printing is analogous to color video display except that three colored dyes are used.
