ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the subject of statistically designed experiments with reference to real manufacturing processes and products. It presents the case studies to illustrate different experimental designs and methods of analysis. Some of the case studies relate to well established manufacturing processes whilst some relate to processes which are still very much at the development stage. Friction welding belongs to a family of techniques including flash welding and traditional forge welding. Linear friction welding offers many advantages over the more traditional approaches. For high volume production, injection moulding is the most widely used and economic of all the thermoplastic processes. The friction welding process is a complex one, but the quality of the welded interface seems to be dependent in some way on the local strain that occurs. For high volume production, injection moulding is the most widely used and economic of all the thermoplastic processes.
