ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the readers will identify the chemical constituents and properties of concern for each waste and waste mixture. The chemical makeup of each waste (i.e., chemical type/s and concentration) determines its hazardous nature. Once the hazardous properties are understood, informed management decisions can be made concerning regulatory classification, packaging, storage, worker health and safety, and ultimate treatment and disposal. Like point of generation indices, waste data sheets have been in use for a number of years. Commercial treatment, storage and disposal facilities, for example, typically require generators to file written technical profiles of each waste prior to material acceptance. In addition to qualifying wastes for off site acceptance, generators have their own specific and unique set of data requirements and information needs.
