ABSTRACT

Meristems Meristems form the new cells of a plant. Apical meristems occur near the tips of roots and shoots and give primary growth. They give rise to the epidermal tissue, vascular tissue and ground meristems that form the parenchyma. Intercalary meristems are formed at the nodes of grass stems. Lateral meristems generate secondary growth. The vascular cambium is a cylinder that forms new phloem and xylem. The cork cambium is also a cylinder, that forms the bark.
