ABSTRACT
Biological importance Abscission is a controlled process resulting in the removal of plant parts either when they have completed their development or function (e.g. flowers) or in response to adverse conditions (e.g. leaves). The process permits the plant to achieve efficient fruit dispersal and to survive an unfavorable period, particularly drought.
