Nitrogen fixation Nitrogen gas cannot be used directly by plants but is fixed to N-containing compounds by free-living or symbiotic bacteria and cyanobacteria. Legumes with N-fixing bacteria in root nodules are of enormous importance ecologically and in agriculture. Some other plants have associations with a diverse group of other N-fixers.
