ABSTRACT

From the description of the process (Chapter 5) and mechanism (Chapter 6) of mechanical alloying (MA), it is easy to realize thatMA is a process involving a number of both independent and interdependent variables. As for any other process, modeling of MA has been carried out for the purpose of identifying the salient factors affecting the process and establish process control optimization and instrumentation. By modeling the process effectively, it is possible to bring down the number of actual experiments needed to optimize the process and achieve a particular application. A highly successful model would also predict the outcome of the process. In MA, for example, if one can predict the nature of the phase produced under a given set of milling conditions, it would be considered a very successful model.
