ABSTRACT

The Fran Coal Mine (Figure 1) is located at an elevation of approximately 503 m (1650 ft) in Sproul State Forest in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, about 155 km (96 miles) northwest of the state capital in Harrisburg. The site was partially surface-mined in the 1930’s and

additional coal recovery was undertaken between 1973 and 1977. Soon after mine closure and reclamation, a fish-kill was reported in Cook’s Run which is immediately downgradient from the site (Figure 2).
