ABSTRACT

This chapter presents activities undertaken to better understand which construction processes would derive most benefit from the application of mobile information and communication technologies. In order to genuinely improve construction project performance against key criteria of time, cost, quality, safety, the environment and respect for people, the organisations in the construction supply chain need to become more integrated through increased internal and external collaboration. The research team conducted a literature review to identify which construction processes could be suitable for the introduction of Mobile information technology (IT) and which technologies would be applicable. Since the late 1980’s, both the academic and industrial sectors have been investigating the use of Mobile IT for developing applications used in field data collection. Quantitative data will be collected to verify the costs to the contractor and the benefits that Mobile IT brings. Data was collected from the COMIT community, and other relevant external contacts.
