ABSTRACT
The American coal mining industry is facing extreme challenges, because of the competitive pressures from other energy resources, and impact of economy and environmental regulations. It is expected that the leading mining companies will continue to lead, and the leaders will absorb less productive firms, or force them to exit the business.
