ABSTRACT
Coal has always been one of the most important sources of energy and despite short-term fluctuations, its total production and consumption in the world shows an increasing trend. Amongst others, longwalling is the most widely used method in deep coal mines. It has
been the predominant method in Europe and it has become more popular in most other parts of the world in the post war era.
