ABSTRACT
For the compaction of subgrade materials, asphalt pavement materials and roller compacted concrete, several forms of compaction machines equipped with single steel drum rollers and tandem rollers are in everyday use in civil engineering – for example the macadam and steam rollers of old. The ‘wheels’ on these machines do not deform to any degree when they accept axle load, and as a consequence are referred to as ‘rigid wheels’.
