ABSTRACT

Rocks and formation water facies are two independent records of geological paleoenvironments. The rocks, limestone, chalk, and certain clays reflect sedimentation in the open sea; they record sea transgression phases. In contrast, halite, gypsum, and certain clays (muds) are formed in continental evaporitic environments; they record sea regression phases and thus complement the record of brine-tagged meteoric formation waters, addressed in the following chapter.
