ABSTRACT

It is the objective of this chapter to demonstrate how the knowledge developed in

previous chapters can be applied to solve specific cases of failure. As explained

earlier, the exact procedure can vary considerably from one case to another. This

is demonstrated by the failure cases presented in this chapter. Also, the relative

importance of various investigative tools are illustrated with specific examples.

To draw the reader’s attention to various aspects of failure, two main types are

considered in this chapter: (i) failure of engineering alloys as a result of improper

processing practice and (ii) failure of engineering products.
