Chemical and physical properties The original definition of a transition metal was an element or ion with a partially filled d-orbital (Section A1). This definition is somewhat out of date, as today discussions of the transition elements include, for example, zinc, copper, silver, and cadmium, all of which have complete outer d-orbitals. Elements now classified as transition elements are thus grouped by virtue of their chemical and physical characteristics.
