Nucleophile The term nucleophile literally means ‘nucleus-loving,’ and applies to any species that has an affinity for partially or wholly positively charged centers. Consequently a nucleophile must be electron rich. The location of excess electrons within a molecule is referred to as the nucleophilic center, examples of such are oxygen in water and alcohols, and nitrogen in ammonia and amines.
