Chemical formulae There are several ways in which the composition of a compound may be described. Each way differs in the actual detail of the information provided. It is possible to describe a molecule by its empirical, molecular, or structural chemical formulae. The empirical formula is simply the ratio of the various elements in a compound, the molecular formula is the actual number of each element in the compound, and the structural formula indicates the bonding arrangement among the elements.
