Flying the airplane in a cross-controlled state is not “normal” and tends to make some student pilots uncomfortable. To help the student to see just how the side-slip is used in landing in a crosswind, one might have the student “drag” the runway about 2-3 feet above the surface at near touchdown airspeed to get the feel of using bank to control the drift and rudder to maintain the longitudinal axis parallel with the runway direction. If a local runway is too busy, try a straight section of a road that has no obstructions and practice the side-slip at a higher altitude for safety.
