Flight instruction has a better safety record than personal flight. Flight instruction makes up more than 20 percent of all flight hours and accounts for less than 6 percent of the fatal accidents, while personal flight which represents about 42 percent of flight activity accounts for 67 percent of the fatal accidents (Air Safety Foundation 1998a). Why? The instructional flights are generally performed in good weather conditions, near an airport, in slower airplanes with fixed landing gear.
