ABSTRACT

The search for pleasure has always been at the centre of human endeavour. Jordan discusses this aspect in the paper ‘Human Factors for Pleasure Seekers’: ‘Since the beginning of time humans have sought pleasure… A source of pleasure comes from the artefacts with which we are surrounded. For centuries human beings have tried to create decorative and functional artefacts, artefacts that have raised the quality of life and brought pleasure. These objects were rough-hewn from rock or made out of bronze or iron by inexperienced hands that only intended to make something for personal use. Then, when trading and bartering developed, these people became skilled craftsmen who created artefacts for the use of others in the community.’
