ABSTRACT

In the PERSONA-project* we have tried to develop a richer picture of what it means to navigate in and interact with information spaces. One important distinction was made between wayfinding and exploration (Benyon and Höök 1997). In wayfinding activities, users have a clear understanding of what they want to find. In exploration, on the other hand, people are not trying to get anywhere, they are not trying to find their way. In exploration, it is difficult to apply the traditional usability criteria such as efficiency, ease of learning and task completion. Instead, it is the overall experience that matters: whether the space encourages curiosity, feels interesting or entertaining, provides for a socially rich environment, or appeals to our emotions and aesthetic values (Munro, Höök and Benyon 1999).
