ABSTRACT

To assess human thermal environments it may be necessary to quantify the environment (basic parameters), and its effects (physiological, psychological, etc.) and interpret the values obtained in terms of the health, comfort, and performance of those exposed. Basic environmental parameters can be quantified using measuring instruments; physiological responses can be measured using transducers connected to the body and psychological responses are quantified using subjective and behavioural measures. Assessment tools include the use of the heat balance equation and the derivation and use of thermal indices.
