ABSTRACT
At a recent meeting to develop an International Standard for assessing the reaction of human skin to hot surfaces, the Japanese delegate reminded experts that there were many people in the world who wore no clothes, and we should remember that if we are considering an International Standard, exposed skin in people is not always confined to a small percentage of the surface area of the body e.g. hands, face, etc. This point is important and raises interesting issues about our ‘natural state’. However, it is probably the case that for most people, most of their skin is covered by clothing for most of their lives.
