The evolution of information technology over the last six decades can be best appreciated if we step back and briefly review four epochs: The takeoff, IBM’s high time, “Wintel”’s rise to power, and the latest, which we may call the Internet ecosystem, not just for lack of a better label but also for fundamental reasons (as we will see in Section 2).
