ABSTRACT

Over the last 50 years, the office has become the place where more and more people spend their working lives. The technology available to agriculture and industry in developed countries is such that large numbers of people are no longer required to produce food or manufactures, and if they are, then globalization of business means that production is moved to less developed countries where wages are lower. In 1995, in the US, the largest economy in the world, 41 percent of people employed were office workers (Carnevale and Rose, 1998).
